Dude - what gives? I've been staring at Dusty Hill for months now and it's starting to creep me out.

What gives? Nothing really.

I've just come to the conclusion that blogging for the most part -- both doing my own and contributing to others -- is pretty much a total waste of time.

Particularly in regard to discussing current events and politics.

I've come to believe that the majority of the participants have completely made their minds up AND are also almost totally ignorant of the facts. Narrow minds and ignorance -- never a good combination.

Even people I know who are reasonably intelligent seem to have no fundamental grasp of the facts.

"There were NEVER any WMD in Iraq."

"Really? I guess 10,000 dead Kurds CAN be wrong."

The result is simply people talking -- or in most cases shouting -- past each other.

I've started to believe that about 99 percent of the population has never read a book, never read the New York Times or the Wall Street Journal, and God forbid they should actually spend their time reading an actual official report on a given topic.

(Did you see Britney on the MTV awards the other night? What a trainwreck....)

I don't claim to have all the answers, and I'm sure I'm as set in my views as anyone.

But the difference is I actually make an effort to know what I'm talking about before I open my mouth or type.

I read four or five newspapers a day, and have CNN running in my office all day long. My spare-time reading consists primarily of books on history and world events.

The Duelfer Report? Read it. The Tagouba Report? Read it. The Senate Intelligence Committee Report on Prewar Intelligence in Iraq? The Downing Street Memo? The Iraq Study Group Report? Read it, read it, read it.

Well, that makes one of me.

So I've decided not to bother trying to engage in an informed, intelligent public dialog on world events and political developments.

Because there isn't one.

Don't worry -- I'll still stop by OOF and make obtuse, off-point remarks in a vain attempt at being humorous. Just don't expect me to comment on the actual content of your blogcasts.

BTW, Dusty Hill creeps everyone out -- but the man is a bass god.

it's a crying shame that we won't be hearing from you more. you are one of the more talented writers in the blogosphere. and certainly better informed. please reconsider when you have something that needs saying.

That's extremely kind of you to say, John.

If I think of anything relevant to say on world affairs or politics, I'll just email you -- you're pretty much my whole readership anyway.

;)
